Foundation problems are expensive, and a lot of them trace back to one preventable issue: water sitting against the house because the ground slopes the wrong way.
The rule of thumb
The ground should fall away from your foundation roughly six inches over the first ten feet. That gentle slope sends rain and snowmelt away from the structure instead of letting it pool against the walls.
Signs your grade is off
- Water pooling near the foundation after rain.
- Damp or musty basement and crawl spaces.
- Mulch and soil washing toward the house.
- New cracks appearing in foundation walls.
Fixing it
Correcting the grade means reshaping the soil around the home to restore that slope, often paired with drainage so water has a clear exit. Done once, properly, it protects the most expensive part of your property for years.
