Most lawns across Evansville and the surrounding Tri-State are cool-season grasses: tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and ryegrass blends. They do the bulk of their growing in spring and fall, which is exactly when they want to be fed.
The Tri-State feeding calendar
A simple, reliable schedule for our climate looks like this:
- Early spring (March–April): a light feeding to green up after dormancy.
- Late spring (May): a balanced application before summer heat sets in.
- Early fall (September): the most important feeding of the year for root growth.
- Late fall (late October): a final winterizer to store energy for spring.
Why fall matters most
It is tempting to pour everything on in spring, but fall feeding is what builds deep roots and a denser stand of grass. A well-fed fall lawn shrugs off weeds and bounces back faster the following year.
Easy to get wrong
Over-fertilizing burns turf and feeds runoff into our local creeks and the Ohio River. If you are unsure how much your yard actually needs, a quick soil test, or a call to our crew, will save you guesswork and money.
